A UKCAT practice test is a great way to prepare for the real exam. The UKCAT e.g. the UK Clinical Aptitude Test is used by universities to guide their selection process for medical and dental applications. It’s a requirement for around 75% of UK universities offering these courses, so chances are you’ll have to sit it!
A ukcat practice test should include every section of the test e.g. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Situational Judgement and Decision Making.
To be best prepared as possible, you should do many practice tests every day, along with doing practice questions. We have a book that contains 1250 practice questions (the largest question bank in the market) that you can find here. This will allow you to work and complete each part individually and start to improve your skills and see improved results from home.
There are two practice tests which we recommend:
1.The official ukcat practice tests.
There are three available practice tests from the ukcat Consortium – this is the organisation that created the ukcat. They have practice test A, practice test B and a practice test C. These tests are conducted as they would be at a test centre, timed and on a computer. We would recommend saving these tests to do as benchmarks once you have done some extra revision.
2. UniAdmissions Practice Papers Volume 1 + 2. This book contains 6 practice tests in it, with fully worked solutions for these tests. This allows you to do timed runs, then accurately mark yourself. Again, we recommend doing many practice questions in between each practice test attempt and measuring improvement in each section, so you can identify your weak spots and target them for efficient revision.
UKCAT Practice Resources
There are lots of free resources available to help you with your ukcat Practice. However, a lot of them tend to be outdated because the ukcat has changed substantially in the last 3 years. Thus, if you’re looking to register for question banks or buy books – ensure they are for the 2017 entry.
The Ultimate UKCAT Guide is targeted at students applying for 2019 Entry – it contains 1,200 practice questions (over 200 for each UKCAT section, including abstract reasoning, decision making, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, situational judgement). Once you’ve worked your way through the questions in this book, you are highly advised to attempt the Online UKCAT practise tests and check your answers afterwards. Simulate Exam Conditions
When doing ukcat Practice Test papers, it’s important that you simulate exam conditions as much as possible. This means you follow the instructions as closely as possible.
- Only allow yourself two sides of A4 plain paper for rough working (emulating your whiteboard).
- Only use non-scientific calculators and ideally the online version.
- Spend the correct amount of time on each of the sections:
Verbal Reasoning Section – 22 minutes (44 questions)
Quantitative Reasoning Section – 25 minutes (36 questions)
Abstract Reasoning Section – 14 minutes (55 questions)
Decision Analysis Section – 32 minutes (28 questions)
Situational Judgement Section – 27 minutes (67 questions)
Remember that the route to a high ukcat score is your approach and practice. Don’t fall into the trap that “you can’t prepare for the ukcat”– this could not be further from the truth. With knowledge of the test, some useful time-saving techniques and plenty of practice you can dramatically boost your score and pass. And remember, that even if it goes horribly wrong – there are lots of options open to you.
