Oxford Medicine Student Success Story
It’s important to celebrate the achievements of our students after months of hard work and dedication.
Today we are celebrating Elliot’s story of achieving an Oxford Medicine offer. Elliot kindly sat down with Rob, our Content Team Leader, to talk through his application journey from using our Oxbridge Medicine Programme:
Let’s start the journey from when we first spoke to Elliot about his Oxford plans during one of our free consultations.
“Working with UniAdmissions really boosted my confidence around the Interviews and Personal Statement due to feeling more aware of the process, such as what to expect during Interviews and what to include or leave out of my Personal Statement to make it Oxford quality.” – Elliot
1. Initial Contact And Meeting Your Tutor
Going back to the start Elliot, can you remember why you first contacted UniAdmissions?
I felt I had all the components to make a decent application already, but I personally felt that I wanted some way of accountability to keep me on track. I was looking for some structure and your programme syllabus was exactly what I needed and was looking for. Although there were other support options out there, I decided to contact UniAdmissions because you had everything in one place, and the Portal made all the resources very accessible.
How was your initial session with your tutor?
I thought that it was good as it allowed my tutor to assess my personal needs and then create a tailored Oxford application strategy for the year ahead. We established a rapport immediately and discussed colleges (I wasn’t sure which to choose before speaking to her), Personal Statement advice (my tutor had been through the process so she gave me helpful insights into what to include and what to remove), and Admissions Test support with my UCAT and BMAT.
2. Oxford Medicine Application Support
How did you benefit from our Personal Statement support?
I found the support was quite comprehensive. The review service was really useful since it allowed a continual process of improvement and going back and forth. The feedback was quick each time I submitted it, and the feedback clearly outlined and explained how I could improve my Personal Statement.
What aspect of our Admissions Test support did you find the most useful?
For something like the BMAT, the essay review service was useful as it is not always clear what I should be adding to the essays and the review service gave me more clarity on what to include. Aside from essay support, I felt you provided insightful information and strategies for Sections 1 + 2 of the BMAT on the course. I was scoring decently before I started working with UniAdmissions, but the support helped me to score highly more consistently.
How did you find our Interview support?
The Interviews were my favourite part of your support, and the fact that I got several mocks was invaluable. This enabled me to practice a variety of questions with different people who were adopting a variety of Interviewing techniques. I was able to vocalise my thoughts and I felt more confident knowing what to expect. The tutors really challenged me in preparation for the actual Oxford Interview. This definitely helped.
3. Our Impact And Looking Towards The Future
What impact did we make on your application process?
Working with UniAdmissions really boosted my confidence around the Interviews and Personal Statement due to feeling more aware of the process, such as what to expect during Interviews and what to include or leave out of my Personal Statement to make it Oxford quality.
The structure provided was valuable and I felt I had a safety net as there was always the opportunity to have someone to turn to outside of school who could help me if I was having a panicky moment. This constant support meant that there was someone that I could easily find to answer any questions I had.
What can you take away from our support to help you in further education?
My time management skills improved through my own dedication and commitment to strengthening my application. However, the most valuable skill I felt I developed was effective communication. Although it was developed in a way that is related to Interview communication, I feel this will carry across to effective written and spoken communication, especially when working with multiple people. Something that will now become a big factor in my life as I enter medical school.
Also, from your support and the time I spent working on my application, I feel I am in a good position to teach others and impart the skills I learnt.
Final question Elliot, would you recommend our Oxbridge Programmes to your friends and why?
It would, of course, depend on the type of support required as I found that UniAdmissions was very tailored to my own needs. But yes, I would.
